2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

After the 2013 SL was unveiled late last year, it was only a matter of time before an AMG-fettled version arrived. The SL 65 AMG is the most potent (and expensive) version of the SL, not least because of the six-litre, V12, twin-turbocharged chunk of aluminium up front. This produces an eye-watering 630 horsepower and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. Despite these huge numbers – 60 hp more than a Ferrari 458 Italia – the SL 65 AMG is let down by its extra bulk. The 0-62 mph run takes four seconds – over half a second slower than the Italia – and the top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The SL has always had a bit of a weight problem, but Mercedes-Benz’s engineers have managed to trim off over 170 kgs (375 lbs) of fat from the 2013 car – mainly because of the all-aluminium bodyshell. Also new to the V12 car is the AMG 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic gearbox. With its wide gear ratios and start/stop functions this transmission helps improve the SL 65 AMG’s fuel economy by 17 percent over its predecessor.

“The combination of exclusive V12 dynamic performance and a refined roadster driving experience was already the defining attribute of the predecessor model. We are convinced that, with the new SL 65 AMG, we have developed an incomparably exciting high-performance vehicle for the small, but loyal community of fans,” says Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Standard equipment for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG includes AMG sports suspension with active body control, an electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering system, a three-stage ESP system and a limited-slip differential.

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG will make its world debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show in April.
